10 Defining Experiments

10 Defining Experiments: CIFO 2006 Grants Program Exhibition

At the heart of 10 Defining Experiments, cifo's inaugural Grants Program Exhibition is cifo's greatest commitment: to broaden the global understanding of work by contemporary artists from Latin America. Contemporary artists in Latin America are producing some of the most challenging and exciting art today, and cifo is dedicated to increasing awareness of their complex and varied art production. With this exhibition,we hope to present Latin America as a diverse region, and to dispel stereotypes about Latin American art as unified in style and subject matter-that it is decorative and conventional, grounded uncritically on a nostalgic past, and based on essentialist notions of identity.

These 10 artists are creating new, unique, projects specifically for this exhibition in diverse media: photography, painting, video, performance, installation, and multimedia. The subjects and issues addressed by the artists are varied and range from a formal discussion on the nature of the still life in painting, to poignant statements about violence in Latin America, to investigations on the nature of language, knowledge, and history. A shared element found in the projects is an experimental, investigative, praxis: a discursive process whereby each artist attempts to arrive at definitions to question, but not necessarily to fully answer, complex layers of meaning found in everyday life.
