CIFO Art Space is a state-of-the art venue in downtown Miami warehouse district that presents contemporary art exhibitions from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, works by the foundation's Grants and Commissions Program recipients, and experimental art programming. CIFO's galleries and piazza provide a dynamic gathering place for cultural exchange and dialogue between the city of Miami and the international art community.
Originally built in 1936, the warehouse that houses CIFO underwent a dramatic redesign in 2005. Ella Fontanals-Cisneros joined efforts with architect Rene Gonzalez to create a warm and vibrant environment dedicated to the arts. CIFO Art Space won an AIA Design Award in 2006 as well as a special award from the Italian Trade Commission.
The building's dramatic facade evokes nature and artistry with its multicolored Bisazza tiles creating a bamboo motif. The overall area covered with tiles is 4,800 square feet. More than two hundred colors were used in this extraordinary mosaic. This façade offers a singularly beautiful alternative to the stark gray-and-white-concrete surrounding the CIFO Art Space. Inside, CIFO's galleries are an ideal raw space for displaying art and can be adapted in any number of ways for exhibitions and special events.
