CCE presented the panel discussion Form and Desire, a public and free laboratory that took place on May 8 counting with specialists Jesús Fuenmayor (director of CIFO), Jorge L. Gutiérrez (visual arts manager), José Antonio Navarrete (independent curator), along with artists Eugenio Espinoza, Andrés Michelena, and coordinator Roc Laseca. The panel was presented during the exhibition “Recordar / Disponer / Resistir” (Remembering / Providing / Resisting) by artists Eugenio Espinoza and Andres Michelena that was made in collaboration with CIFO and included works by Eugenio Espinoza from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros collection.

Miquel Navarro Fun Facts:

1. Born in Mislata, Valencia (Spain) in 1945.
2. Started his career as a painter and since the seventies has devoted himself to sculpture.
3. His practice reflects on the role of architecture in shaping geographical space.
4. Unmistakable representations of cities or “clusters” displayed as sculptural installations grouping together small pieces, configured as diverse urban buildings.
5. “City Metaphors” creates a sort of Cubist chronology where antiquity and modernity merge.
6. The current exhibition is characterized by massive sculptures and features over a thousand elements of different materials such as aluminum, zinc, and wood.
7. This exhibit is Miquel’s first exhibit in South Florida.

CIFO presented yesterday its new book “Pulses of Abstraction in Latin America” at the MAC museum during PArC in Lima (Perú Arte Contemporáneo). We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the PArC organizers.

SHARON LERNER (LIMA, 1979)

Curator of Contemporary Art at Museo de Arte de Lima – MALI. Obtained an MA in Curatorial Practice at the California College of the Arts (2010). In 2008 she was part of the curatorial team in charge of the Visual Arts Office at the Miraflores Public Galleries, where she participated in the development of several exhibitions. In 2010 she was awarded the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Arts 101 Curatorial Fellowship  supported by the Kadist Art Foundation, institution for which she also developed research. She is co-author of Fragmented Corpus: Actions in Lima 1966-2000, in “Arte No es Vida: Actions by Artists of the Americas 1960-2000” (Museo del Barrio, NY, 2008) and “Post- Ilusiones. Nuevas Visiones. Arte Crítico en Lima (1980-2006)” (Lima, Fundación Wiese, 2007).

Roc Laseca is a musicologist (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and semiotician (Helsinki University) with a PhD in Art Theory and Cultural Prospective from University of La Laguna, where he held a research position between the years of 2006 and 2011. He is currently a member-elect of the Board of Directors of the ATADEM Society and the Athenaeum of La Laguna (Tenerife), where he served as Secretary of the Arts for the period 2011-2013. Laseca has developed curatorial programs for institutions and museums in Europe, Latin America and the United States. He has been guest professor at Lanús University (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Nova University (Lisbon, Portugal) and Miami Dade College (Miami, Florida), among others. In 2012, he coordinated the Long Beach, California Museum of Latin American Art’s public program ‘Peripheral Thought’, and is co-founder of LA F_LTA, Cultural Research Center, of the Canary Islands, which is currently affiliated to University of La Laguna. Part of his work on contemporary semiotics has been published by the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the Institute of Canarian Studies, and others. Laseca latest curatorial projects in Miami are ‘BILL VIOLA: LIBER INSULARUM’, presented at MOCA North Miami (Dec. 2012 – Mar. 2013); ‘THE SPANISH SWING”, presented at Ascaso Gallery (Mar. 2013 – present) and ‘REMEMBERING/PROVIDING/RESISTING: EUGENIO ESPINOZA + ANDRES MICHELENA’, presented at CCEM with the collaboration of CIFO (Apr. 2013-present).
