Magdalena Fernández

Magdalena Fernández was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1964. After completing one year toward a B.A. degree in education, she turned to a career as a graphic designer at the Neumann Foundation’s Design Institute in Caracas, where she worked from 1985 to 1989. From 1990 to 1993, Fernández continued to work in graphic design, at Inscape Graphic Design, and A.G. Fronzoni Studio, in Milan.

Fernández has had numerous solo exhibitions of her artwork internationally, at galleries in Lisbon, Venice, and Mantua; and at museums in Venezuela: the Museo de Artes Visuales Alejandro Otero (2000), the Sala Mendoza (1993 and 1998), and the Museo de Arte Moderno Jesús Soto. Her work has also been included in several group shows, in Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, France, the United States, and Israel.

Fernández held a teaching post in the master’s program at the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas Armando Reverón in Caracas from 2002 to 2004.

She was the recipient of the Arturo Michelena Salon award and the Eugenio Mendoza prize (both 1996), and the Christian Dior Biennial Prize (1999). In 1999, Fernández was named by critics the Best Foreign Artist at the Atlantic Forum in Pontevedra, Spain.

Fernández lives and works in Caracas.
