cifo - a cultural spot

our space

cifo provides a permanent space for the presentation of engaging and provocative contemporary art exhibitions, featuring work that has resulted from our Grants and Commissions program, and also showcasing exhibitions curated from the Ella Fontanals Cisneros Collection.

Originally built in 1936, the warehouse that houses cifo’s exhibition space, located at 1018 North Miami Avenue, has been newly redesigned to contribute a uniquely creative architectural element to the urban landscape of downtown Miami’s warehouse district. Ella Fontanals Cisneros, cifo’s founder, joined efforts with commissioned architect René González to establish a welcoming place in this burgeoning district. For the building’s façade, González manipulated natural patterns to render the effect of a bamboo jungle; the motif was created with multicolored glass Bisazza tiles. cifo’s interior gallery is an ideal raw space for displaying art, and can be adapted in any number of ways for exhibitions. Both the art space and cifo’s plaza serve as forums for cultural exchange and dialogue between the city of Miami and the international art community.

The façade of the cifo building is a custom-made mosaic wall, composed of Bisazza glass tiles, adhered to four-by-four-foot aluminum panels. Individual panels can be removed and transferred to new location for reinstallation or exhibition. The overall area covered with tiles is 4,800 square feet. More than two hundred colors were used in this extraordinary mosaic. This façade offers a singularly beautiful alternative to the stark gray-and-white-concrete exteriors of so many art institutions.
