The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation celebrates Jarbas Lopes and Tomas Saraceno in an unexpected exhibition

MIAMI, FL - - After the great success of Tomas Saraceno’s special launch of his new monumental work When Spheres Meet Spheres from Miami tu Cuba, at the beaches of Crandon Park, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation celebrated the opening night for Jarbas Lopes and Tomas Saraceno’s exhibition at The Collins Building in the Miami Design District. The exhibition which marks the culmination of the foundation’s first residency program will run until May 29th, 6:00 pm.

The Brazilian artist’s pieces are reflection on the complexities of contemporary culture and society, adopting an artistic strategy that appropriates popular culture through drawing, braiding, live performances, music and many other artistic expressions. After drawing on different aspects of society and culture for inspiration, he has produced a series of pieces which result from a subtle balance between an “aesthetic” and critical approach to society.

In the work presented at the exhibition, Jarbas has being showcasing, once again, his capacity to dismantle and reconstruct a reality through “Gambiarra”, the art of “making do”. Hurricane, for example, is based on a postcard reproducing a kitsch painting of palm trees swinging in a beautiful beach sunset; Life Guard Station, is based on a non-picturesque postcard of a life guard station on a bare beach; and Rafters based on a photograph of the artist and Tomas Saraceno paddling on a Key Biscayne Beach.

Tomas Saraceno’s unique work is the perfect fusion of sciences like physics, psychology and chemistry with artistic expressions such as design and architecture in order to create an ecological friendly environment that simulates the clouds. In recent years, his work has been centered in the research and production of flying balloons that assembled in different and ever changing manners create different environments design could fulfill the future basic needs of the world’s population.

Tomas Saraceno presented a series of challenging and visionary video and slide projections of his beach project at Crandon Park. In four screens, placed at different heights, we could witness the process of installing the monumental work When Spheres Meet Spheres from Miami to Cuba at the beach, covering a dramatic spectrum from morning to sunset, and also showing the playful and at times risky interaction of the artist, crew members and the public with the piece.

Ella Fontanals Cisneros of Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation hosted, along with the cifo team, the artists’ exhibition during the highly anticipated gallery night, which added to the huge success of over 1,000 art lovers that attended the evenings’ festivity.

The Foundation offers a residency program to contemporary artists from Latin America living outside the United States. The program provides studio and living space in Miami for a three month period in order to expose artists to a stimulating environment that promotes experimentation, inspiration and opportunities for cultural exchange. The residency is followed by an exhibition to show the work created during the artist’s residency. For more information log on to: www.cifo.org.
