Ten Floridians

December 2, 2003 – March 28, 2004

INAUGURAL EXHIBITION

To fully illustrate the richness and variety of South Florida visual artists, Miami Art Central (MAC) sought out the objective opinions and individual voices of nine curators of different backgrounds and global perspectives for its inaugural exhibition. A few have never been to Miami, but all of them embraced the project from as far away as Madrid, Paris, São Paulo, and Buenos Aires.

Each curator questioned and examined the most fundamental aspects of human existence as conveyed through the visual arts in South Florida. The result is not a historical narrative. Instead, the choices made stemmed from an inherent feel for the area’s cultural milieu. Not surprisingly, therefore, the artists in this exhibition capture both the spirit and the scope of contemporary art in South Florida today.

The 48 works presented here demonstrate the fact that Miami Art Central is not a place for austere exhibition practices. Rather, it intends to establish a new arena for intellectual interaction and for documenting and enhancing key avant-garde developments. The vivid talent and creative visions of ten Floridians have set MAC firmly on the road to realizing these wonderful possibilities.
