Triángulo: Loló Soldevilla

An exhibition showcasing the works of three pivotal figures in Cuban geometric art.

Triángulo: Loló Soldevilla

Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection

December 6, 2017 - March 22, 2018

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is excited to announce Triángulo – Loló Soldevilla, Sandu Darie, and Carmen Herrera, an exhibition showcasing the works of three pivotal figures in Cuban geometric art.

Triángulobrings together the creations of Soldevilla, Darie, and Herrera, representing key vertices in the evolution of Cuban abstract art. These artists share a unique journey where geometry serves as a common language for aesthetic renewal. The exhibition highlights Soldevilla’s scientific exploration of space, Darie’s formal artistic rigor and new pictorial structuralism, and Herrera’s intellectual sophistication and distinct style.

This exhibition features 50 works from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, all created in the 1950s and 1960s. It underscores the remarkable innovation of Cuban art during this period. With diverse materials and a rejection of imitation, these pieces made significant contributions to the international abstract art scene.

In collaboration with Microsoft, Sandu Darie: An Immersive Experience is a special section of the exhibition designed to extend access to critical Cuban artworks beyond their physical locations. This immersive experience utilizes Windows Mixed Reality Headsets and Microsoft HoloLens to bring to life Darie’s works, including the environmental sculpture Árbol Rojo (1981) in Havana and the sculptural mural El Día y La Noche (1982). Additionally, Microsoft has recreated one of Darie’s Estructuras Transformables (Untitled, c. 1950s) in HoloLens, allowing viewers to see its kinetic movements, previously accessible only to curatorial staff due to its fragility. This immersive experience will be available exclusively during Art Basel week.

The exhibition will also feature transformable spatial structures by Darie made from Plexiglas—an often overlooked aspect of his oeuvre—as well as the projection of Cosmorama, an audiovisual collaboration with ICAIC that was pivotal in the development of video art in Cuba.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a carefully curated selection of documentary and bibliographic materials from the CIFO Veigas Archive, which will provide an in-depth exploration of the lives and works of these three influential artists.
