Inside Out, Photography After Form

December 1, 2010 - March 7, 2011

Inside Out, Photography After Form: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection is co-curated by Simon Baker and Tanya Barson. This exhibition, drawn from the photographic holdings of the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, investigates the dynamic relationship between the camera lens and the processes of constructing, producing, and deconstructing form. It explores the myriad ways form can be created and dismantled through the lens.

Rather than tracing a chronological lineage, the exhibition brings together contrasting images and bodies of work that examine the concepts of space and form from both internal and external perspectives, challenging preconceived notions about photography's critical potential.

The experimental engagement of photography with the formal possibilities of line, light, and shadow will be re-evaluated through the works of post-war conceptual and contemporary artists who critically engage with modernism and its legacy.

The exhibition will be organized around two interrelated categories, each containing a diverse range of works. The first focuses on form, construction, and space through experimental abstractions and formal conceptualism, drawing on the legacy of object studies and still lifes (both organic and inorganic). The second category directly engages with reality and the documentary while resonating with conceptual practices, exploring photography in architectural, urban, and conventional landscape traditions.

Each category contains its critical tendencies and tensions, with works that challenge coherence and the boundaries of these provisional classifications, inviting viewers to reconsider their understanding of photography's role in contemporary art.
