Shifting Constructs

CIFO Grants & Commissions Program Exhibition

September 13 - November 8, 2009

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation proudly presents Shifting Constructs, the exhibition for its 2009 Grants and Commissions Programs. This exhibition showcases new works by the award recipients from both programs, creating a unique opportunity for dynamic dialogue between artists of different generations on a single platform.

As with previous grant cycles, the artists featured in this exhibition were not selected through a specific curatorial framework. Instead, the innovative works represent the culmination of a year-long process in which artists are nominated and chosen from hundreds of proposals to develop and present new pieces to Miami audiences. Only after this serendipitous selection does a common thread among the works emerge, revealing a striking dialogue between them.

Shifting Constructs reflects the shared practice of reinterpreting, questioning, and manipulating established paradigms of history, ideas, materials, and images. The featured artists explore themes such as maps, identity, memory, and archives through an exciting blend of video, installation, photography, sound, and drawing. As Elvis Fuentes discusses in his essay, "The Art of Suspicion," included in the upcoming extended brochure, the artists confront these themes "from a point of view that is both diaphanous and searching." This inquisitive approach prevalent in all the works highlights a continual shift in perceptions and ideas, establishing a forum for new avenues of inquiry.
